THE NEUTRAL ZONE
J.K. Rowling, best known for writing the Harry Potter series, recently made headlines after satirically tweeting that “people who menstruate” could have a name such as “Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”, highlighting her belief that menstruation is one of the defining characteristics of being a woman. She was immediately faced with backlash and authored a Twitter thread further defending her stance on gender and sex, stating, “erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives.”
Rowling had been accused of being a TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist) prior to this event. In December of last year, Rowling defended British researcher Maya Forstater after she lost her job due to posting on Twitter that “transgender women cannot change their biological sex.” Some organizations in the U.S., such as the Women’s Liberation Front, have collaborated with conservatives in spreading their ideology that gender identity “has no grounding in science.”
Transgender advocates have expressed frustration with Rowling’s comments, stating that she “willfully distorts facts about gender identity and people who are trans” and that the concept of biological sex is not so black and white. The Trevor Project stated in a 2019 study that 78% of transgender or nonbinary youth “reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity.” Rowling was defended by those who claim that biological sex is a scientific fact often ignored by transgender advocates.
