THE NEUTRAL ZONE
President Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen is back in federal prison after “balking at certain conditions of the home confinement he was granted because of the coronavirus pandemic.” The Hill reported his return to police custody comes after the New York Post “published photos of the attorney dining out in Manhattan.” His attorneys attributed the issue to the condition of his home confinement which forbade him from speaking with the media and publishing a tell-all book he began working on in federal prison.
In 2018, Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for financial and campaign finance crimes and lying to Congress about his involvement in an effort to build a “Trump Tower” in Moscow during the 2016 campaign. Other prominent figures such as Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and attorney Michael Avenatti have also been released to home confinement amid the pandemic.
Cohen’s move comes as prisons see a dramatic surge in coronavirus cases. In California, lawmakers and top criminal justice officials are urging Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) to release thousands of people from state prisons. Nearly 7,000 prisoners in the U.S. have contracted COVID-19 and more than 700 correctional officers have been infected. Some facilities have ramped up testing efforts in an effort to curb the spread, including Wyoming which is set to test all inmates and employees at its five correctional facilities next week.
