THE NEUTRAL ZONE
Ivanka Trump shared a photo on social media while holding a can of Goya Foods black beans, along with the company’s slogan. The move comes after the company’s CEO triggered a boycott for praising President Donald Trump.
The tweet, which garnered over 35,000 retweets and 62,000 likes in a little over four hours, possibly violated government ethics rules “prohibiting the use of public office to endorse products or advance personal businesses gains.” White House adviser Kellyanne Conway faced criticism in 2017 after she appeared to break similar federal ethics rules after publicly announcing Americans should “go buy Ivanka’s stuff.” She was subsequently “counseled” by the White House, according to then-press secretary Sean Spicer.
A spokesperson for Ivanka Trump responded to the backlash, saying she is “proud” of Hispanic-owned Goya Foods and that “only the media and the cancel culture movement would criticize Ivanka for showing her personal support for a company that has been unfairly mocked.”

The tweet in support of the company, however, might have violated federal ethics laws, which say, “An employee’s position or title should not be used to coerce; to endorse any product, service or enterprise; or to give the appearance of governmental sanction,” according to the Department of Justice. The DOJ describes such action as a misuse of one’s government position.

Ivanka Trump’s defenders took to social media to say she was likely poking fun at the controversy. Democrats were accused of using their offices to try and damage the company. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., tweeted: “Oh look, it’s the sound of me Googling ‘how to make your own Adobo.'”
