THE NEUTRAL ZONE
President Donald Trump plans to deploy federal law enforcement to Chicago and announced Monday he would send agents to other major cities controlled by Democrats. The move has sparked condemnation from some Democrats and activists. Videos have circulated on the internet depicting agents wearing military gear without identification taking people in unmarked vehicles.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said sending militarized federal agents to her city would “spell disaster” and urged President Trump to instead support new laws to help get illegal guns off the street. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker decried President’s Trump plan, aligning with Mayor Lightfoot. Several other mayors have publicly denounced President Trump’s threat, demanding that federal deployments be halted. New York City’s mayor said he would take President Trump to court if he went forward with sending federal agents.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) “defended the deployment of undercover federal agents in Portland by comparing protestors in the city to the Confederacy.” Trey Gowdy, former House Oversight Committee Chairman, also expressed his support for Trump’s announcement, stating federal agents would be “hailed as liberators” if a Democratic administration deployed them.
