The Hallmark Channel’s holiday season movie lineup will include 40 new movies, with some featuring LGBTQ narratives. The move came after the channel received backlash for its original slate of Christmas movies lacking LGBTQ inclusion. Producers responded to frustrated viewers assuring them that they are in “active negotiations” and that “more details” are coming. The company has publicly spoken out about making diversity and inclusion a “top priority.”

During the winter of 2019, Hallmark aired a commercial of two brides kissing. The channel eventually pulled the commercial and then apologized for doing so. The ads were pulled following a published petition led by a conservative group asking the channel to “please reconsider airing commercials with the same sex.” The same group, One Million Moms, has responded to the recent announcement with another petition, calling for a boycott of the entire Hallmark brand, which includes cards, wrapping paper, and Christmas ornaments.

Hallmark has continually come under fire for lack of diversity – the channel cast its first Black lead in 2018 and only nine movies featuring Black leads have aired in the Countdown to Christmas lineup to date.
