Moderna announced Monday that they are starting stage three of the vaccine trials for COVID-19. The vaccine, mRNA-1273, is now in the COVE (Coronavirus Efficacy) stage in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as they helped fund the $1 billion trial. Stephane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, stated, “We are grateful to the efforts of so many inside and outside the company to get us to this important milestone. We are indebted to the participants and investigators who now begin the work of the COVE study itself. We look forward to this trial demonstrating the potential of our vaccine to prevent COVID-19, so that we can defeat this pandemic.”

In this phase, Moderna will have up to 30,000 volunteers placed into one of two groups, where one receives mRNA-1273 and the other receives a saltwater placebo. The testing will take place in 89 centers around the United States. The conclusion date for the trial is currently unknown and will be based on the data given by the volunteers.

Although many are glad to see progress in finding a vaccine, some are worried about the future price given that Moderna has received substantial funding from the United States government. Influencers voiced concern that the company will seek only profit when the vaccine will be released to the public, rather than selling it “at cost.” Others expressed hope this potential vaccine works, as Moderna is farther ahead on trial runs than most companies.
