THE NEUTRAL ZONE

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden named California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate on Tuesday. In a tweet, Biden said, “I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate.” Kamala Harris said in a tweet that she was honored to join Biden’s campaign. The two are set to deliver remarks in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Del., on Wednesday.

If elected, Harris would be the nation’s first female, first Black and first Asian American vice president. The pick also provides the Democratic ticket with generational diversity, as Biden is 77 while Harris is 55. Black voters are expected to account for approximately 13% of the expected 2020 electorate and Asian Americans are expected to account for 5% of the electorate. As FiveThirtyEight noted, much of the conversation surrounding Biden’s vice-presidential pick implied that selecting a Black person would create enthusiasm for the ticket among Black voters.

The selection comes after monthslong pressure from the progressive wing of the Democratic party to select Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, as well as lobbying on behalf of California Rep. Karen Bass and former Obama national security adviser Susan Rice. Following the announcement, Rice complimented Harris, calling her “a tenacious and trailblazing leader who will make a great partner on the campaign trail.”

Katrina Pierson, Trump 2020 senior advisor, published a statement in which she referred to Harris as “Phony Kamala” and alleged she will “abandon her own morals, as well as try to bury her record as a prosecutor, in order to appease the anti-police extremists controlling the Democrat Party.” Pierson also mentioned the alleged potential for “trillions of dollars in new taxes” and a “government takeover of healthcare.”

INFLUENCER PERSPECTIVE

Kamala Harris on Twitter, 8/11/2020: .@JoeBiden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals. I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.

Ben Shapiro on Twitter, 8/11/2020: Kamala Harris is a far-left radical with a shocking inability to connect on a personal level; she’s rehearsed and mechanical. Her record is wide open to serious attack. She adds nothing to the Biden ticket other than checking some boxes for the Twitter blue checks.

Kyle Griffin on Twitter, 8/11/2020: Pelosi: “Joe Biden’s naming of Sen. Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for Vice President marks an historic and proud milestone for our country. As the Vice President of the U.S., Sen. Harris will continue her legacy of trailblazing leadership to move our nation forward.”

Kaitlan Collins on Twitter, 8/11/2020: Vice President Pence and Kamala Harris are scheduled to debate each other Oct. 7 in Utah, per previously announced schedule. The Trump campaign is out with a statement hitting Harris, calling her “Phony Kamala.”

Yamiche Alcindor on Twitter, 8/11/2020: Katrina Pierson, Trump 2020 senior advisor, releases first campaign statement on @KamalaHarris & it includes a misleading statement. “Not long ago, Kamala Harris called Joe Biden a racist and asked for an apology she never received,” she says. Harris never called Biden a racist.
