Russia’s fiercest critic of President Vladimir Putin remained in a coma Thursday morning after authorities feared he was poisoned.

Alexei Navalny, Russia’s opposition leader, fell ill and was crying out in pain on a flight to Tomsk, a Siberian city. The plane made an emergency landing in Omsk. Doctors refuse to share medial details with Navalny’s personal physician, although they did say he was on a ventilator. Navalny reaches millions of followers through his YouTube channel and led protests against proposed constitutional amendments that would allow Putin to stay in power until 2036.

He was jailed many times by Russian state prosecutors and had a mysterious reaction to food in a Russian jail last year. In recent years, critics of Putin have been poisoned, fallen to their deaths from balconies and otherwise been assassinated. Opposition leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov was shot dead in 2015, and Alexander Litvinenko died in 2006 after drinking tea laced with polonium-210 in Britain, where he had defected.

The Kremlin wished Navalny a “speedy recovery.”
