WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The nation’s jobless filings in the past week surpassed 1 million once again, suggesting a slight uptick in layoffs as Americans move forward without federal jobless benefits. A National Womens’ Law Center report this week found that 1 in 5 child care jobs have been lost amid the pandemic, with women accounting for the majority of that workforce. Women in child care are also more than twice as likely to be either Black or Latina, according to the report.

A global pandemic did not stop Apple from reaching a new zenith in its course as the most valuable tech company on the planet. A surge in Apple’s stock late Wednesday pushed the company’s valuation to $2 trillion, highlighting consumers’ increasing reliance on technology.

Former vice president Joe Biden has angled in on President Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic in his presidential campaign. Biden, who is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday, had numerous advocates who criticized Trump’s response during speeches in the virtual Democratic National Convention, and he will launch a new TV ad Thursday on the pandemic’s fallout. U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif. made history on Wednesday as the first woman of color to accept a major party nomination as Biden’s vice president.

A new study of coronavirus patients has found a consistent way to distinguish COVID-19 symptoms from the common cold or flu. The study identifies symptoms in a specific sequence that tend to start with a fever and then progress to a cough and muscle pain, then nausea or vomiting, and finally, diarrhea. Researchers have found that the loss of smell reported by some coronavirus victims is another telling symptom. While other cold and flu patients also report a loss in taste and smell, coronavirus patients experience a more profound loss that points to how the virus invades the brain and nervous system, with potentially severe neurological consequences.

Concern is growing following recent studies that show children infected by COVID-19 may be more contagious than previously thought. As schools across the country reopen, those concerns are quickly surfacing from teachers who say they are being forced to work in an unsafe environment. Detroit teachers have authorized a strike over safety fears, while the American Federation of Teachers has advised educators to implement “safety strikes” if school reopening plans don’t protect their health.

Germany and Spain are the latest European countries to experience their highest daily infection rates since April, a resurgence that the World Health Organization says could be due to a relaxation of public health measures. South Korea is also experiencing a nationwide surge with daily increases in the hundreds.

A new U.S. intelligence report has found a more nuanced course of events in China that led to the initial spread of COVID-19 to other countries. The report concluded that local officials in Wuhan attempted to hide information about the virus from Chinese authorities out of fear of reprisal, allowing the virus time to spread.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has made good on his vow to crack down on homes that are not adhering to local restrictions on social gatherings. The mayor ordered the utilities to be cut off from a “party house” in Hollywood Hills that amounted to what he called a nightclub as it violated the local order numerous times.

Researchers show children are silent spreaders of virus that causes COVID-19 – EurekAlert! – 8/20/2020
In another breakthrough finding from the study, the researchers challenge the current hypothesis that because children have lower numbers of immune receptors for SARS-CoV2, this makes them less likely to become infected or seriously ill.

Being professional over Zoom means something completely different from being professional in person—and that’s something we learned before awkwardly interrupting an important client on a call.
