THE NEUTRAL ZONE

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy promised a full virtual room of angry senators that he would “scour every plant” to ensure the U.S. Post Office can deliver the nation’s election mail “fully and on time.”

Democrats pushed DeJoy on their fears that his reforms were intended to slow mail-in ballots to help President Donald Trump win reelection as Republicans accused them of pushing a conspiracy theory. Trump has blasted voting by mail numerous times. DeJoy called those fears “outrageous.”

DeJoy attempted to soothe concerns by stating he himself had voted by mail in the past. While he conceded that his changes were causing delays, DeJoy also said he would not restore sorting machines. Tensions were high as senators argued with DeJoy and each other about the election, which is three months away. A hot mic caught Sen. Tom Carper dropping F-bombs in a moment that he thought his feed was experiencing technical difficulties.
