The Acting Secretary of Homeland Security on Tuesday warned a defiant Portland to quell the unrest in its city or the federal government would take over.

Acting Secretary Chad Wolf said that the federal government would “have no choice but to protect our American citizens” if Oregon fails to bring peace. “Your inaction has fostered an environment that has fueled senseless violence and destruction night after night,” Wolf wrote in a letter. “You have stood by passively, arguing that the nightly violence “will ultimately burn itself out.” The evidence demonstrates otherwise.”

Portland officials continue to refuse assistance from the federal government and remain insistent that the protests aren’t out of control, but President Donald Trump has portrayed Portland as a city in chaos, saying it was on fire and railed against what he called “left-wing” protestors. He also said Wolf and Attorney General Bill Barr were joining forces to combat the unrest.

Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden blamed Trump, not the protestors, for encouraging violence after a 17-year-old shot and killed two protestors and wounded a third at a Kenosha, Wis., rally and a Trump supporter was shot and killed in a rally in Portland on Saturday.
