As they attempted to arrest him Thursday, enforcement officers shot and killed the primary suspect in the killing of a President Trump supporter during a protest. Authorities believe Michael Forest Reinoehl shot Aaron “Jay” Danielson, a supporter of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer, last Saturday during clashes between Black Lives Matter protestors and Pro-Trump supporters.

In an interview with Vice published hours before his death, Reinoehl said he had “no choice” in the situation, noting, “I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn’t going to do that.” Reinoehl described himself on social media as “100% ANTIFA” and had participated in several protests in recent months, acting as security for Black Lives Matter protestors.

A fugitive task force was surveilling Reinoehl in an apartment in Lacey, Wash., approximately 120 miles north of Portland, after Portland police issued a warrant for his arrest. When he left the building and got into a car Thursday night, officers attempted to make a traffic stop. A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service said Reinoehl threatened officers with a firearm. Law enforcement fired on the vehicle, though they did not confirm if shots were returned. Reinoehl was pronounced dead at the scene.

President Donald Trump called for the Portland Police to arrest Danielson’s killer, though he did not mention Reinoehl by name, shortly before the incident occurred Thursday night.
