THE NEUTRAL ZONE

President Donald Trump made unfavorable remarks about dead soldiers, calling them “losers” and “suckers,” according to a report published Thursday by The Atlantic.  The report cited four anonymous people with firsthand knowledge that President Trump made the remarks after he canceled a visit to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 because he was worried about the rain messing up his hair. He also disparaged the military service of the late former president George H.W. Bush and has objected to wounded veterans being involved in a military parade, the report stated.

A visibly angry Trump denied the report via Twitter and spoke to reporters when he landed at Andrews Air Force Base after returning late from a campaign rally on Thursday night. “It’s a total lie; it’s fake news. It’s a disgrace, and frankly it’s a disgrace to your profession,” he said to reporters in an impromptu press conference after exiting Air Force One.

The report was supplemented on Friday morning by the Washington Post, which quoted “a former senior administration official” who said Trump “frequently made disparaging comments about veterans and soldiers missing in action, referring to them at times as ‘losers.’”

White House spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said in the Post story, “This report is false. President Trump holds the military in the highest regard. He’s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms and supporting military spouses.” The Atlantic said in a statement: “We stand behind our reporting.”
