Attorney General William Barr suggested charging violent protestors with intent to overthrow the government. The charge, called sedition, is a felony and punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors would have to prove there was a plot to bring imminent danger or an end to the current government, a serious charge. Police officials have said both far-left and far-right protestors have incited violence, but Barr has targeted the far-left movement Antifa in recent weeks, including his statement that he blamed them for violence.

Barr also reportedly asked prosecutors in the Justice Department’s civil rights division to look into charging Mayor Jenny Durkan of Seattle for allowing residents to establish a police-free protest zone this summer.

U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington Brian Moran denied the report that Barr asked federal prosecutors to explore whether they could bring criminal charges against Durkan. “As U.S. Attorney, I would be aware of such an investigation,” he said.
