THE NEUTRAL ZONE
President Donald Trump was anxious to be released from the hospital as soon as today as conflicting and confusing reports about his condition swirled around Washington. White House officials said Trump was antsy, even anxious, for a release. “He’s done with the hospital,” a source told CNN.
Trump will consult with his doctors and a decision will be made later today as to his release, said White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who added that the president made “unbelieveable progress” since Sunday afternoon. But doctors also released troubling news Sunday about his health in recent days, saying his oxygen blood level dropped to alarming numbers twice and that they administered a steroid usually reserved for those seriously ill, as well as supplemental oxygen. In an attempt to show strength, Trump hopped in a hermetically sealed motorcade Sunday evening with two Secret Service agents to wave to supporters, which prompted unnamed agents to express concern about their exposure to the virus.
Trump released a video just before he got into the vehicle, framing his experience with the virus as a teachable moment. “It’s been a very interesting journey; I learned a lot about Covid,” Trump said, later adding: “I get it and I understand it and it’s a very interesting thing and I’m going to be letting you know about it. In the meantime, we love the U.S.A., and we love what’s happening.”
Here is some other news regarding COVID-19 and the president:
• Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell postponed the return of the U.S. Senate for two weeks after the virus infected three Republican senators, but he also vowed to push ahead with Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Amy Coney Barrett.
• Some news outlets reported that Trump knew he was sick at least a day earlier than he reported.
• A recording released by veteran reporter Bob Woodward to promote his new book revealed that Trump said in March that he didn’t have time to meet with top public health expert Dr. Anthony Fauci as the virus began to erupt across the nation.
Pence and Harris prep for a debate with suddenly higher stakes – NBC News – 10/5/2020
No vice president has debated while the president is known to be sick and possibly still in the hospital. And never have two vice presidential nominees debated at a time when Americans are giving far more than cursory thought to how each might lead in the top job.
Alec Baldwin defends ‘SNL’ Trump sketch amid president’s coronavirus diagnosis – Fox News – 10/5/2020
The sketch rubbed some of Trump’s supporters the wrong way, to which Baldwin issued a response in a lengthy video shared on Instagram Sunday. The 62-year-old actor noted that, because people aren’t being told officially that Trump is “gravely ill,” the sketch simply toed the line at worst.
‘That should never have happened’: Inside Trump’s Walter Reed parade – CNN – 10/5/2020
But his seconds-long parade only underscored the relaxed attitude toward transmission that appear to have landed Trump in the hospital to begin with.
Trump diagnoses triggers global uncertainty over American leadership – NBC News – 10/5/2020
With less than 30 days to go until the election, the Trump administration’s “America First” foreign policy is widely established. But as the world’s main superpower militarily, economically and culturally, no other leader’s health has the same impact on global affairs as the American president’s.
“Donald J. Trump defeats COVID”: The absurd Soviet-style propaganda campaign around his illness – Salon – 10/5/2020
It’s not news that Donald Trump is a crude and cruel piece of work, of course. But it’s worth recalling that ugly incident because it provided a window into his twisted psyche and the way he views his “brand” as being a virile strongman with superior genes. One aspect of that brand is that he isn’t one of those losers who gets sick.
Mark Meadows ‘Optimistic’ Trump Will Leave Hospital On Monday – The Daily Wire – 10/5/2020
On Sunday, Trump ventured out of the hospital in a motorcade to salute cheering supporters, which the media blasted but Trump’s own doctors said was fine. White House spokesman Judd Deere said Trump’s trip outside the hospital “was cleared by the medical team as safe to do,” adding that personal protective equipment was used to protect those around the president, including Secret Service agents.
