THE NEUTRAL ZONE

Decision Desk HQ called the election for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden at 8:50 am EST Friday. The organization made the call after projecting that Biden would win Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes, placing him at a total of 273 electoral college votes.

Matt Morgan, general counsel for President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign, issued a statement declaring, “This election is not over.” He referred to the projection of Biden winning as false, adding that Georgia is headed for a recount and repeating allegations of improperly harvested ballots in states such as Nevada.

Decision Desk HQ projection models are used by publications such as The Economist, Buzzfeed, Vox and Insider. No major news networks, including CNN, NBC, MSNBC or Fox, have made the call. The Associated Press is often considered the gold standard for election projections, but Decision Desk HQ has sometimes made calls faster. Nate Silver, founder and editor in chief of FiveThirtyEight, praised Decision Desk HQ for making the call and added, “The outcome has been apparent for a while. No reason other sources shouldn’t follow.”

Business Insider published an interview with Decision Desk HQ President Drew McCoy explaining why they made the call before other outlets. McCoy said that the recently announced vote counts for Pennsylvannia pushed Biden over the top, with remaining counties leaning toward Biden. He said that Decision Desk HQ is confident in their official call, but added that it’s normal and reasonable for other election services and media outlets to hold off.

MEDIA PERSPECTIVE

Why Decision Desk called Pennsylvania, and the presidential race, for Joe Biden – Vox – 11/6/2020
The reason: Pennsylvania has tens of thousands more ballots to be counted that we have every reason to expect will only expand Biden’s currently small lead. But in Georgia, the count is nearly — but not quite — done, and Biden’s lead is even smaller (a little over 1,000 votes).

BREAKING: Decision Desk HQ Declares Biden Winner After Giving Him Pennsylvania – The Daily Wire – 11/6/2020
The Trump campaign has not conceded the race, maintaining that “this election is not over” while legal challenges play out and outstanding ballots continue to be counted. “The false projection of Joe Biden as the winner is based on results in four states that are far from final,” Trump campaign general counsel Matt Morgan said in a statement shortly after Decision Desk HQ called the race for Biden.

Decision Desk HQ, which reports election data for several news outlets, called the Pennsylvania race and the presidential election for Biden just before 9 a.m. Friday. Other major news outlets — including the AP, on which Salon relies — have not yet projected a winner.

‘This Election Is Not Over’: Trump Campaign Issues Defiant Statement After First Biden Victory – Mediaite – 11/6/2020
The Donald Trump re-election campaign proclaimed “the election is not over” as Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential race grows increasingly probable.
