THE NEUTRAL ZONE

President Donald Trump’s legal team distanced itself from lawyer Sidney Powell Sunday after Powell made unfounded voter fraud claims in the past week.

“Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own. She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity,” attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis said in a press release. Giuliani introduced Powell as a member of the team on Thursday, though she was not directly involved with cases filed by the campaign. President Trump listed Powell as a member in a Nov. 14 tweet.

“I agree with the statement today. I will represent #WeThePeople and seek the Truth,” Powell said in a statement. “I intend to expose all the fraud and let the chips fall where they may. We will not allow the foundations of this great Republic to be destroyed by abject fraud.”

Powell asserted various claims surrounding the voting process, all without verified evidence.  Powell claimed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger were involved in a conspiracy to buy a contract with Dominion Voting Systems. PolitiFact gave Powell a “Pants on Fire” rating – named for the insulting rhyme “Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire” – last week for suggesting Dominion and Smartmatic voting machines were built to change election results. Powell posted screenshots on Twitter of an affidavit alleging fraud in Venezuelan Smartmatic voting machines, though the screenshots were incomplete and did not include a signature. Smartmatic does not provide the voting technology in the key states that finalized President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Powell’s claims led a growing but small cohort of Republicans to denounce her involvement. Former RNC political director Mike DuHaime called for the GOP Twitter handle to remove a video of Powell making the claims, saying the video was “embarrassing to promote.” Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie agreed with this sentiment, going so far as to call the legal team a “national embarrassment” on ABC’s “This Week.” Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson invited Powell to his show, but she refused the interview after Carlson pushed her to provide evidence to support her claims.

MEDIA PERSPECTIVE

Sidney Powell: Wasn’t Part of Trump’s Legal Team – Newsmax – 11/23/2020
Attorney Sidney Powell, who the Trump campaign said Sunday is not part of the team representing it in legal challenges to the presidential election, has agreed that she does not work for the campaign or for President Donald Trump. “I agree with the statement today,” Powell told The Wall Street Journal in a statement after President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani announced that she was not part of the team. “I will represent #WeThePeople and seek the Truth. I intend to expose all the fraud and let the chips fall where they may. We will not allow the foundations of this great Republic to be destroyed by abject fraud.”

Trump Team Dumps Sidney Powell As Attorney Peddles Bonkers Conspiracy Theories About Election – Talking Points Memo – 11/23/2020
President Donald Trump’s legal team dedicated to overturning the election results jettisoned attorney Sidney Powell, who’s been continually pushing flatly bizarre conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, on Sunday. “Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own. She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team,” Rudy Giuliani, who’s been spearheading the President’s corrupt attempts to steal the election from President-elect Joe Biden in the courts and is no stranger to conspiracy theories himself, and Trump campaign attorney Jenna Ellis said in a statement.

‘Kraken On Steroids’: Sidney Powell Releases Statement After Trump Legal Team Says She’s Not Part Of Team – The Daily Wire – 11/22/2020
The move comes after Powell spoke at a press conference last week with Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis. […] Trump tweeted over a week ago that Powell was part of his legal defense team, writing: “I look forward to Mayor Giuliani spearheading the legal effort to defend OUR RIGHT to FREE and FAIR ELECTIONS! Rudy Giuliani, Joseph diGenova, Victoria Toensing, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis, a truly great team, added to our other wonderful lawyers and representatives!”

Team Trump Fired QAnon Lawyer Sidney Powell But She’s Tweeting Through It – Vice – 11/23/2020
The flailing Trump campaign and legal team distanced itself from QAnon lawyer Sidney Powell on Sunday night, openly repudiating someone it described just last week as a member of the team’s “elite strike force.” The Trump campaign abruptly booted Powell, who has alleged massive conspiracies with zero evidence, in a statement released Sunday. […] The official severing of Powell from the Trump legal team, a stark departure from where things stood last week, when Powell appeared at an unhinged press conference with Giuliani and Ellis, came after she publicly accused Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp of taking bribes from the Venezuelan government to award the state’s voting systems contracts to a company whose machines she claims changed votes from Trump to Biden.
