Hunter Biden, President-elect Joe Biden’s son, announced Wednesday the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware is investigating his taxes. The investigation encompasses multiple financial issues, including whether Biden and his associates violated tax and money laundering laws when doing business in foreign countries.

Although the investigation began in 2018, the inquiry went covert because of a general practice against taking overt actions that can affect the election. The Justice Department took steps this week by informing Hunter of the investigation, though it is still unclear how far along prosecutors are in reaching a conclusion. The announcement comes as President-elect Biden considers his nominee for attorney general, who would continue to investigate his son.

“I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” Hunter said in a statement. President-elect Biden’s transition team released a statement that the President-elect was “deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., accused Hunter of selling influence following the announcement of the investigation. Rep. Gaetz castigated the media for softening the pre-election coverage on potentially compromising information on Hunter’s laptop. Fox News contributor and former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders added to the accusations, saying the media had covered up the federal investigation during President-elect Biden’s campaign.

A Republican-led Senate probe released in September said Treasury records showed “potential criminal activity” in Biden’s transactions, though the probe did not note if any policies had been affected by his work for Ukranian energy company Burisma in 2014.

Media finally covers Hunter Biden story after avoiding controversy before election – Fox News – 12/10/2020
The mainstream media appears to finally be taking Hunter Biden seriously, at least now that his father has already won the presidential election. In the final weeks of the campaign, there was an unprecedented media blackout of the explosive reporting from the New York Post that shed light on Hunter Biden’s questionable business dealings overseas. On Wednesday, the Biden-Harris transition announced that his “tax affairs” were being investigated.

DOJ Is Investigating Hunter Biden Over Taxes, Biden Transition Announces – HuffPost – 12/9/2020
News of the investigation comes just as Joe Biden is set to announce his nominee for attorney general of the United States. Hunter Biden had been a constant target for President Donald Trump during the 2020 campaign. Hunter Biden said in a statement that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware informed his legal counsel about the investigation on Tuesday. The U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment, citing Justice Department policy.

FBI Began Investigating Hunter Biden In 2018 But Stopped During Election, Allegedly Due To DOJ Policy – The Daily Wire – 12/10/2020
The Justice Department began investigating Hunter Biden’s taxes back in 2018, but reportedly paused that investigation while Hunter’s father, Joe Biden, was running for president, citing a DOJ policy against “overt” action that might impact the election. Of course, such a policy didn’t seem to stop the FBI from pursuing a baseless investigation against President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, nor did it stop the bureau from investigating Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.

Hunter Biden Says He’s Under Federal Investigation Over His Taxes – BuzzFeed News – 12/9/2020
The statement did not offer further details about the nature of the investigation. A source familiar with the matter told BuzzFeed News that it is not related to the attacks that outgoing President Donald Trump and his allies have made against Hunter Biden during the campaign. […] Biden’s son was a constant target for Trump in the closing months of the campaign, with the president and Republicans frequently raising unfounded and debunked accusations about Hunter’s business dealings overseas. Trump’s obsession with investigating the father and son, via the Ukrainian government, led to his impeachment this year.

The Seeds of Hunter Biden’s Current Legal Woes Were Found on His Laptop – The Daily Beast – 12/9/2020
The Justice Department’s announcement on Wednesday that it was investigating Hunter Biden, for what he deemed to be “tax affairs,” took root several years ago with a much broader inquiry that includedpossible money laundering, according to a report by CNN. That inquiry reportedly fizzled, leading instead to a probe on tax matters that is now being led by the U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware. But evidence of the larger probe was apparent in the markings on a series of documents that were made public—but went largely unnoticed—in the days leading up to the November election, according to two individuals familiar with the matter.
