Steven Sund, the head of the U.S. Capitol police, announced he will resign Jan. 16 along with two senior security officials just minutes before an officer died of injuries delivered by Trump supporters attacking the capitol.

Sund, Senate sergeant-at-arms Michael Stenger, and House sergeant-at-arms Paul Irving faced a firestorm of criticism after a mob of rioters broke into the capitol with relatively little resistance. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would fire Stenger as one of his first actions after he became majority leader later this month. Officer Brian Sicknick died Thursday evening, raising the number of deaths to five.

The preparedness of the police led some to place blame on Sund and President Donald Trump and not the officers, especially after reports showed that leaders declined help from the National Guard and other police forces days before the D.C. protests took place. But President-elect Joe Biden led a list of prominent people who questioned the tepid response and wondered openly if it would have been different had people of color stormed the capitol.

“No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently from the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol,” Biden said.

Attack on the Capitol shows America’s racial double standard is alive and well – The Undefeated – 1/8/2021
The legendary writer James Baldwin memorably summed up America’s racial double standard more than a half-century ago. Sadly, his words remain as true today as they were then: “If any white man in the world says give me liberty or give me death, the entire white world applauds,” Baldwin told talk show host Dick Cavett in 1969. “When a Black man says the exact same thing — word for word — he is judged a criminal and treated like one.”
